Trustees of the Village of Bellows Falls, Regular Meeting March 28, 2017
The Sustainable Valley Group will be operating a new farmers market. We are requesting to use the Hetty Green and the parking lot segment adjacent to the Green, under the same conditions as the Bellows Falls Market last year.
The time period of the request is:
Fridays 4:00-7:00PM, June 2nd through September 29, 2017. Weekly Markets. Rain or Shine
Background on the new market:
This market operated by SVG aims to be inclusive and open. During similar markets in 2008 and 2009 the market averaged 1.5 times as many vendors as recent times in Walpole or Bellows Falls markets, yet had more than twice the sales of either market. This new market, operated by SVG has the support of Bellows Falls Farmers Market members, Walpole Farmers Market Members, and the Great River Food Co-op Board. We have hired a new manager, Janice Leary-Jones, who has years of experience starting and running a Farmers Market in Mattapoisett Massachusetts that is still thriving today. Janice and her family are farmers in Rockingham and value-added food producers that participate in the local farmers market.
One of the challenges the markets have had is remaining financially sustainable. The business plan developed by the SVG board, begins with some seed money from grants, for new signage, marketing materials, and management, and is self-sustaining with market operations and fundraising by year 2, with proper implementation.
Last year's market tested the Hetty Green site, and we discovered there is more than enough room for the vendors and the customers in the park, with twice as many vendors and customers. Consequently, we are asking for less of the parking lot space than the Bellows Falls Farmers Market used last year. The request is to use the Green and the parking lot segment adjacent to the Green.
We have discussed how things went last year, and the proposal to continue this year with Mike Hinds- Highway Department Head, Chief Ron Lake – Police Chief, and TD Bank management. All are happy with how things went and indicated support for the proposal for the coming year.
Please send communications or contributions to SVG with "GFFM" in the memo field. Mail to: Greater Falls Farmers' Market, PO Box 25, Bellows Falls, VT 05101.
